Education Index Reading Notes
The index summarizes schooling quantity components and does not measure learning outcomes, school quality, inequality, attendance, or completion directly.
Calculation basis
The Education Index is calculated as the average of the capped expected-years index and the capped mean-years index.
Ranking scope
The ranking covers countries and territories with available 2023 UNDP component values in the HDR 2025 data release.
Source-year caution
UNDP reports 2023 components, but underlying schooling inputs can draw on surveys, censuses and agency estimates from different collection years.
Interpretation limit
Higher index values indicate higher reported schooling-year components under the UNDP formula. They do not prove higher learning quality.
Source and Methodology
The main ranking is a page-level calculation from official UNDP component data. It is not an official UNDP Education Index ranking table. Country rows use 2023 reference-year components from HDR 2025. Historical trend modules use the same calculation on UNDP aggregate and country time-series rows for selected anchor years.
The ranking compares only the schooling-year education dimension used in the HDI method. It does not rank national education systems by test scores, equity, learning outcomes, school financing, teacher quality, completion, or policy performance. Source coverage and underlying collection years can vary by country.
